Review for Kent County Border Collie Rescue Inc, Chestertown, MD, USA
I first became acquainted with this organization when I was looking to adopt a border collie in 2006. I have owned and trained several dogs and am a onetime humane society volunteer. This rescue's placement process is somewhat unusual in that it chooses the dog for you, not the other way around. I wasn't sure whether I was on board with this process, but I moved forward anyway, and I'm so glad I did.
The rescue's volunteer team interviews potential adopters on the phone, visits them in person, and then matches applicants with a dog if they have one that is suitable. (If they don't have a good match, they don't force it; they keep the application on hold and revisit the situation as new dogs come in.)
I will admit up front that I would not have chosen the dog they picked for me, mainly because he was a puppy and I was looking for a dog who was 1-2 years old and housebroken. But I agreed to meet him. The puppy was beautiful, and a lot of applicants were eager to adopt him. He was recommended to me because the rescue took the time to get to know my family, see my house, learn about my expectations, and process this information with an objective eye.
It was love at first sight, which is not surprising since puppies are so sweet. We adopted him immediately. But like all true loves, this bond only grew with time. This is the absolute perfect dog for me -- his personality fits intuitively with my family. He is now 7 years old.
I also had a lot of support and help from the rescue to guide me through some of the dog's breed-specific quirks, not just for the first few weeks he was with us, but even today. I know I am a better owner as a result. Full disclosure: Because my experience was so positive, I now occasionally volunteer with this rescue as a foster home and conducting home visits as a means of giving back. I am happy to say I have been able to contribute to other happy matches as a result. Highly recommend the experience and suggest that those who are skeptical about the matching process keep an open mind: The objectivity this process lends to the selection can be underappreciated, but is truly worthwhile.
