Review for Mountain T.O.P., Coalmont, TN, USA

Rating: 2 stars

The ideals of the organization were very very good and christian service oriented, the organization was highly structured and well planned but the leadership lacked "compassion". The way that they interacted with the staff was heavy handed and authoritarian at times. They did however, make a great effort to listen to feedback. They valued performance over motive which I could not reconcile with my own spiritual beliefs. They demanded a great deal from the staff. We worked 17 hour days for ten day stretches. In that time we often drove long distances. During the summer that I was there (2000)- there was a major car accident. The leadership did not seem to realize that it was due to exhaustion of the staff. I hope that things have changed since then.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Great planning and structure and theory.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Have a more thoughtful and considerate approach to the staff.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

The mountain atmosphere and experience with helping assist people in low income areas.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Quite "exclusive" and at times domineering. Interesting people but tough to be an "outsider" among them.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

help the mountain areas find sustainable ways to live.

Ways to make it better...

More understanding would have been offered to the staff. Less demanding hours (10 hour work day max).

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

Making their workplace safe and enjoyable.

One thing I'd also say is that...

The leadership was so structured that it was down to the minute. Anything that anyone questioned was considered "rebellion". Some parts of this faith based organization were truly toxic.

Review for Faith Fellowship Church, Wirtz, VA, USA

Rating: 3 stars

Although this church is friendly, warm, welcoming, and thoughtful in general, I found their lack of transparent financial information very disconcerting. The church can be one sided and controlling in some of it's decision making. There is a board but it seems as though the majority of decisions are made by one person, the senior pastor. There is a lack of emphasis on practical help in community and more empahasis on "prosperity" of the individual. There is also a very strong lack in relationship building and honesty among members, however this was several years ago and many things may have been improved.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Reaching many people.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Emphasize honesty over appearences.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

Their joy and generousity with giving at times.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Happy and kind but not interested in larger world interests (ie poverty, abuse, neglect, mental health, disabilities).

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Change the suffering of many people and reveal a new aspect of God to them.

Ways to make it better...

They would have listened to the real needs of the vision I had and invested more personally in lives of those in need.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

Broadening their spiritual understanding and cultivating stronger friendships in real ways.

One thing I'd also say is that...

They may be not be interested in finding ways to work with those generally overlooked by society. They are good people who work hard.
