Review for REEL GRRLS INC, Seattle, WA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

Reel Grrls is such an innovative non-profit, teaching young people to create media that influences how we see the world- with a "feminist lens". I love that phrase and I believe that in our media flooded lives we need to be vigilant about making space for diverse views. Reel Grrls does this every day by taking their programming out to a wide variety of young people. They have excellent mentors who care deeply about the students. I wish there had been a Reel Grrls for me when I was 15. I also love the amazing opportunities that come up for young people through Reel Grrls- there is an actual production company for the advanced students. They filmed Mary J Blige at Starbucks a few years ago- another group got to film the Dali Lama at Key Arena! A group of young women in Mt Vernon made a movie about being daughters of migrant farmworkers a few years back, and last year made a sequel- all college bound this year! Reel Grrls changes what is we think is possible- I love this organization!

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Develop chapters in 10 cities around the US, and perhaps expand globally.

Review for iEARN-USA (International Education and Resource Network) , New York, NY, USA

Rating: 5 stars

I have been an iEARN teacher since 2003 and have been coaching teachers as they globalize their classrooms since 2006. iEARN has made it possible for me to connect hundreds of students with their peers in other countries, to learn about real global issues that they will need to face together. This is the crux of it all- students learn by doing, and the essential task of our time is to learn to work together. The many projects and highly invested educators create a rich environment for working together- the kids do the rest and it is magical.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Have two conferences each year and thereby double the intimacy of this community.
