When I was in my late fifties I visited the Grand Canyon for the first time and did a day hike down the South Kaibab Trail. After that I was hooked on the canyon, and day-dreamed about hiking to the bottom and actually seeing the Vishnu Schist. I had never been a hiker, and had never done any back-packing. Through Grand Canyon Field Institute classes/guided trips such as "Take a Load Off: Mule-Assisted Backpack," and "Introductory Backpack" I figured it out. I have now done six classes with them, including two five-day Rim-to-Rim backpacking trips. Now at age 66 I'm in the process of choosing which adventure I want to join in 2014.
