Review for Parrot Outreach Society, Punta Gorda, FL, USA

Rating: 5 stars

Parrot Outreach Society was born out of a need that few people realize even exists: the plight of exotic Avians, better known as, PARROTS! In the USA today, there are thousands of these beautiful and intelligent creatures ignored, abandoned, and even worse, abused by the people who thought it would be "cool" to own one. Parrots are not domesticated animals like dogs and cars; it takes a lot of knowledge, time and money to be a good parrot owner. So for many, that "cute little birdie" is now a screaming, plucking, biting grown bird that's too hard for novices to handle. Then what? In the past several years, Parrot Outreach Society quickly grew from a few rescued birds in Pam Hill's home, to a place that now cares for more than 130 exotic birds of all sizes. Staffed solely by volunteers who give their hearts, love, and time to these birds, by feeding, cleaning, socializing and rebuilding their confidence so they may find a new and better place to live, with people who understand, and can fulfill, their needs. Unlike city/county/state-funded humane societies, parrot rescues have to rely on donations to keep their ever-expanding flocks in clean, safe aviaries.  PO is a wonderful, caring haven for abandoned birds; the only such non- profit sanctuary of its kind between Miami and Tampa, Florida. Our goal for 2015 is to once again expand into a larger aviary on our own piece of land in Charlotte County, Florida, kicking off a new fundraiser, RAISE THE ROOF FOR PARROTS!

Rescues, rehabilitates and rehomes abandoned or abused avian exotics. Caring, loving volunteer staff and management keep this facility spotlessly clean and provide a much needed service for people who buy birds without researching the level of care and commitment needed to own a parrot. Also a safe haven for the elderly with a parrot who will outlive them. I personally have POS in my will, giving me peace of mind knowing my five birds will be cared for if I become ill or die.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Find a better way to help them in their goals to educate the public about the growing crisis of bird abandonment.
