Review for MOJA TU, Austin, TX, USA
Moja Tu provides not only school tuition to disadvantaged Kenyan youth (which in itself is critical in Kenya, where many cannot afford to go to school), they encourage the development of relationships between sponsors and recipients. I sponsor a young woman to go to secondary school, have met her twice on trips to Kenya, and communicate with her through Moja Tu sponsored Skype sessions, and letter writing.
Encouragement, mentoring, love, and guidance is of utmost importance to the success of many of these youth. Just think - how many people can thrive with only monitory support? I have seen my student grow in confidence along with improvement of her grades. I am hopeful that after graduation, I can continue to help her with technical training in order that she can compete in the job market, and realize employment in a land of scarce opportunity.
It's been a win-win relationship ; I provide only $75/month for her tuition, full board, uniforms, books..and in return am learning about a young woman from a country and culture so different from mine. How can I not part with a measly $75 - I have so much.
While not in school, or at her guardian's in a remote village, she stays at an orphanage (pictures below) where her possessions fit into 1 trunk, takes baths out of a bucket, uses a long drop toilet (ie: squats over a hole in the ground), takes meals that were cooked over a fire.... and this is a very nice place full of children that are loved by their overseers.
I know that through Moja Tu, I have been able to give her an opportunity to rise out of poverty, and sustain herself. And I am much richer for having done so, and thank Moja Tu for providing me with that opportunity.
Review for Well Aware, Austin, TX, USA
I have written before, and want to update after visiting 2 communities in Kenya this summer that Well Aware has helped. 2 years after installing a water well at an orphanage, there is now a fish pond producing edible (yummy) tilapia and resources available to welcome more girls in a new girls dorm. At a rural farm community, the outpouring of gratitude for their well was amazing. Well Aware also installed a treatment system to rid the water of excess flouride; a problem that affected the teeth of the populace. Brown, stained and etched teeth limit job prospects. Well Aware's water projects are creating a domino effect of positive change in Kenya!
Review for Well Aware, Austin, TX, USA
I was so gratified to be able to go to Kenya and see the huge positive change brought about Well Aware's water projects. Schools being able to accept more students, incidents of sickness reduced, more time spend earning a living or attending school since people don't have to haul water all day....Water is a basic necessity that many in rural Africa do not have. Well Aware is addressing that need in a holistic sustainable way. Unlike many other water 'charities', Well Aware does scientific hydro geological research to insure that the proper system is installed; be it a water well, rainwater collection system or harnessing spring water. Plus, they only accept projects where the community benefactors are engaged, willing, and prepared to maintain the system going forward.
I am proud of the work done by Well Aware. Sincerely, Barbara Baggett

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...
I would wish for grant money to assist with the administration costs of running the organization - so the ED and other vital managers can financially continue what they are doing, and so that donor pledges can go 100% to the water projects.
