Review for Irwin Male Chorus, Mt Pleasant, PA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

The Irwin Male Chorus is a volunteer choral group that provides four-part male harmony concerts in Western Pennsylvania. The majority of the concerts are in area churches and the primary musical content is in the Christian spiritual and American patriotic genre. The stated purpose of he Chorus is twofold: entertain and inspire the citizenry of Westmoreland County and adjoining counties; provide musical training and Christian camaraderie for the volunteers. The Irwin Male Chorus was founded in 1913 and is celebrating 100 years of continual service to the community.

I have been a member of the Irwin Male Chorus for 21 years. I have served in a number of official positions but I, as are the other members, am primarily a singer and a student. We spend roughly 100 hours per year in rehearsal and present 20 or more concerts in an average year. Our musical director and our accompanist are paid staff and the free-will offerings received at our concerts are our primary source of income. Each volunteer also pays a small annual dues payment to be a member.

For most of the members of the Irwin Male Chorus membership is an opportunity to provide a service to the community and to participate in a Christian (non-denominational) ministry.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

...aggressively seek new and younger members to supplement and replace those of us who are growing old and becoming less able to continue to provide service in the manner we would wish.
