Review for Boston Partners in Education, Boston, MA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

I volunteered with Boston Partners for 10 years. I was first a Power Lunch volunteer and worked with ten different first through third graders to help them develop a love for reading. The volunteering was fun for both me and the students but I sometimes wondered if I was making a real difference. I stopped doubting that after I received a copy of a middle school report card from one of my students. Despite struggling a bit in elementary school, she had become a straight A student and credited part of her success to all the time we spent reading books together. I spent another five years as a Math Rules volunteer with the goal of helping kids lose their fear of math. The math program also gave me a chance to work with older student (5th graders) and to interact with the teacher. Weekly, I helped 2-4 students with in-class and home work assignments. The kids I worked with were very bright and needed just a little extra attention from an adult like myself to gain more confidence in their skills. Most of my students made significant strides in their test scores and understanding of math while I worked with them. Most importantly, the kids loved seeing me every week and seemed to forget that I was there to tutor them on math.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

find ways to get more students to benefit from Boston Partners programs.
