Review for WriteGirl, Los Angeles, CA, USA
I started volunteering with WriteGirl last year and I absolutely love it! The organization and the founder Keren Taylor are so inspirational. She really sets the tone for the work the volunteers do.
After my initial training, I volunteered at the monthly writing workshops, usually working with 2-3 girls at a time and guiding them through writing activities and prompts on the genre-of-the-month, which ranged from journalism to character & scene writing to poetry. Even though I'm not a poet, the WriteGirl structure made it accessible to me and the girls.
I also mentored a girl one-on-one throughout the year, meeting her once a week. Working with her on a regular basis was one of the most rewarding aspects of my volunteer year. Seeing the confidence she developed to express her thoughts and own her voice was powerful and inspiring.
I definitely recommend volunteering for WriteGirl - it's so fun and fulfilling!
