Review for Westlake Sports Camp, Moorpark, CA, USA

Rating: 1 stars

Westlake Sports Camp is operated by a crook - Rob Bloom. As a 2 year "volunteer" in the program, I was told I would be compensated and receive a needed letter of recommendation for college. Didn't happen. Turns out I was paid some made up sub minimum wage which was just over half of the legal sub minimum wage, and 4 times below the legal minimum wage for qualified workers. Bloom never trained us and provided minimal supervision, so we should have been paid $8.50 an hour. Regardless, after the program, he kept all the volunteer money and used it however he wanted - no indication what happened to our hard work. He never did record hours for our having to take home camper evaluations that took 10 hours or so for each camp. And since I worked 2 summers he was required to pay above minimum wage according to Child Labor Laws. Bloom says its a non-profit camp but I've heard his public tax records show he takes home in 8 weeks of camp what many entire families make in 2 years of work. If you privately complain to the school about Bloom, his buddies on the faculty report it to him and you are screwed from getting to participate on his team. He sells candy at his camp and takes over an hour to get going each day of camp - not exactly what parents want for their kids. He's bad news. The program is bad . Avoid it and him.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Fire Bloom, and make it a real business since there's a high demand for a good sports camp in Westlake.
