Review for Bay Area Girls Rock Camp, Oakland, CA, USA
I have volunteered with BAGRC for three years now and I'm hooked! The organizations seeks to empower girls through music, and succeeds at that plus empowering volunteers through volunteering. It's pretty powerful to be in a room with all of these bright, talented, thoughtful women and allies. I would strongly suggest you volunteer for BAGRC if you have ever been a musician, or spent time wishing you were a musician. It will change your life!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
my own confidence and youth development skills. Also, it looks good on youth work job applications.
If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...
make it a sleep-away camp so we could all hang out for longer?
Review for Ella Baker Center for Human Rights, Oakland, CA, USA
The Ella Baker Center is the best place I've volunteered at, and that's because I learned so much. I got to help do research for their campaign against Prop 6, and in doing so I learned a lot about California politics, the prison-industrial complex, and issues facing families of incarcerated youth. I also got to meet awesome people from the very diverse coalition building against this proposition- labor leaders, school teachers, prison abolition activists, youth activists and other volunteers like myself. All in all, working there made me feel important and helpful and taught me a ton.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
the kids from Silence The Violence selling their awesome album all over Oakland!
If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...
be very busy!
What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...
learning so much from intelligent people.
The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...
totally awesome, really smart, and really committed.
If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...
pay interns for the hard work they've been putting in, and hire more people to help.
Ways to make it better...
I were more committed and had tougher skin- learning about the sliminess of politicians and abuse of our youth can wear you down.
In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...
getting the message out.
One thing I'd also say is that...
if you are committed, they will give you a lot of responsibility where you get to use your brain and your skills. If you need an internship, I would definitely consider EBC.
