Review for Ellen Gifford Sheltering Home, Brighton, MA, USA
This cat shelter goes above and beyond in serving abused and abandoned cats. The shelter is sparkling clean (you have to rinse your shoes to go inside!) and essentially cage-less. There are a few huge enclosed areas where new cats stay until they feel safe with all the other cats--then everyone runs free in a spacious area with bay windows and tall cat trees. Gifford has something I have not seen at any other shelter: an enclosed outdoor garden where cats can smell real grass and chase butterflies.
Some cats end up being permanent residents for complicated reasons, and they are treated with love and respect. Other cats barely have time for a catnap before a thoroughly vetted adopter takes them home. The adoption process is slow and references are actually checked. Unlike some 'no kill' shelters this really is a no kill shelter where even the most difficult-to-place cats find a safe haven.
