Review for DOROT, Inc., New York, NY, USA

Rating: 5 stars

Over the summer of 2008, I volunteered at Dorot because I wanted to create a difference in people’s lives. I took part in a program called friendly visiting. I, along with one or two other volunteers, would go to the Dorot senior’s house and exchange a friendly, forty-five minutes to an hour conversation with them. The time I spent there had been very enjoyable because the seniors were pleasant, humorous and most importantly, they were extremely grateful. I remember having one visit with a senior; she literally clasped onto my hand and repeatedly thanked me for coming. A simple forty-minute conversation might not meant so much to other people, but to these seniors, that are alone because their children have moved far away, it meant everything. Ambitious

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

the sense that volunteers and seniors were able to interact. During a short 45 minutes, I felt a stronger bond between myself and the senior.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

change the amount of paperwork.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

that I felt a sense of accomplishment. I felt that I made a difference in Dorot senior's day.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

congenial and welcoming. Whenever I had a question, they would patiently explain the answer to me.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

make a difference in the world. We can open hearts and minds of many other adolescents. We can reach out to teens and let them realize that there can be a bond between an elder and a sixteen year old.

Ways to make it better...

Traveling had been more convenient.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

the seniors themselves. Sometimes the seniors are just not in the mood for a visit however, we would not be notified until we have traveled all the way to her house.

How frequently have you been involved with the organization?

One time

When was your last experience with this nonprofit?
