Review for Music Teachers Association Of California, Walnut Creek, CA, USA

Rating: 1 stars

Extremely internal and politically run organization to the detriment of the kids and teachers who are a part of the organization. Poorly and arrogantly run by a group of people, many who are really very mediocre and just in the organization for power. A lot of the stuff that goes on is a power-play. An always seemingly ever similar group of people seem to control and run a lot of the programs and events, and often their incompetence is coupled with bully power.

If you can ignore this element, there may be some programs that could benefit your students, or your children who study with MTAC teachers, but overall, it is an arrogant institution. It also runs a giant program called Certificate of Merit which stresses written theory over actual playing of the instrument, largely because the program is a money-maker for them. Many of my kids were burnt out from the program and quit music afterwards.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

revamp the entire way that people get their power. Even though it is a volunteer organization, many of the volunteer 'bullies' so to speak use their volunteer jobs as a way to create a power structure that inevitably hurts many of the other members and their students. It is often the people who are incompetent, or highly mediocre and who can barely play their instruments who get the most power.
