Review for Mental Health Association of San Francisco, San Francisco, CA, USA
I did a 3 month public policy internship at the Mental Health Association of San Francisco and had a truly wonderful experience there. MHA-SF staff are extremely caring, compassionate individuals who dedicate themselves to creating positive changes in the mental health system. What especially impressed me about the MHA-SF was their commitment to including mental health consumers in their processes for producing change. Rather than functioning as a top-down agency that decides what is best for consumers without actually taking consumers' input into consideration, the MHA-SF serves as an integrated organization that works with consumers and other mental health service agencies to push for social change; in other words, the MHA-SF, through its educational programs and public policy and advocacy work, plays a pivotal role in the social movement for improving mental health.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
through its recent work with Transitional Age Youth--youth whose needs are often neglected by the public mental health system. Through its recent Mental Health Young Adult Advisors Training, the MHA-SF successfully got 21 youth, aged 16 to 24, involved in advocating for change in the mental health system.
What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...
working with other mental health consumers through advocacy meetings and trainings. The MHA-SF provides the opportunity for consumers of all ages to come together and advocate for change in the mental heath system.
The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...
individuals with diverse backgrounds and of varying ages. MHA-SF staff are all incredibly kind and helpful and together foster an inclusive, comfortable work environment.
If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...
extend its effective outreach work to get more consumers involved in public policy and advocacy work. With greater funding, the MHA-SF could offer more trainings to more consumers and hire additional staff to oversee support groups for consumers.
