I am a 29 year breast cancer survivor as well as a University Distinguished Service Professor of Breast Cancer and Professor of Surgery at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. This has afforded me the opportunity to serve on various Advisory Boards of National Advocacy organizations. Without a doubt, the passion, commitment and dedication that the leadership and staff do every day at the NBCF cannot be surpassed. Every employee fulfills their mission. They have even taken on providing grants for Breast Centers to hold 3 day/2 night retreats for patients and their loved ones dealing with metastatic breast cancer. That is HUGE. I am proud to be associated with them. Lillie Shockney

On behalf of the Johns Hopkins Breast Center, we are honored and thrilled to continue to receive funding to support a key element of our breast nurse navigation program. As an institution who performs a large volume of screening mammograms, diagnostic mammograms, and also thousands of biopsies, we know the value of early detection. The NBCF has enabled us to provide nurse navigation in unique ways which includes breast imaging. Our navigator facilitates our weekly breast imaging/breast surgical oncology team radiology reviews so that patients having breast cancer surgery in the coming 7 days have their breast imaging studies and other tests carefully reviewed so that there is nothing missed or overlooked in preparing the patient for the right surgery in the right setting at the right time by the right providers. This same nurse navigator, who herself is a breast cancer survivor, also conducts community outreach events to raise awareness, undo myths, instill the facts, and she personally navigates breast cancer patients from their point of diagnosis through their treatment experience. Though thankfully the majority of breast cancer patients today become long term survivors, not all do. This navigator also is a co-facilitator with me for our semi annual metastatic breast cancer patient retreats which help patients and their family members prepare for what will lie ahead. Additionally, this nurse navigator also oversees our team of survivor volunteers who come on site to hold hands of patients getting biopsies. It is comforting during a time when fear of hearing "you have breast cancer" is on the minds of patients, they can be comforted by someone who is a survivor. She also conducts our annual survivor retreat as well. We are truly blessed to have the support of this terrific organization.

On behalf of the Johns Hopkins Breast Center, we have been blessed with receiving grant support to fund one of our very much needed breast nurse navigators. NBCF does an amazing job providing grants for this purpose so that more and more breast patients can be supported from the point of their diagnostic mammogram/ultrasound through to the completion of treatment and beyond as a long term survivor or end of life. We are proud to have such a partnership with them!! Lillie Shockney, Director, JH Breast Center

The Johns Hopkins Breast Center has been blessed with funding from this stellar organization that directly supports our advocacy, education, navigation and support efforts of patients newly diagnosed with breast cancer as well as those receiving diagnostic evaluation and breast biopsies that may lead to the discovery of a newly diagnosed woman.
Their passion for what they do is to be commended. Their Director is someone i personally admire and take pride in knowing and working with her. Lillie D Shockney, Director, Johns Hopkins Breast Center.
