Review for Proyecto Itzaes, Palo Alto, CA, USA
I have known Cindy, Proyecto Itzaes' founder and director, since well before she hatched this amazing endeavor in the Yucatan. She was an educator, and an author of a Spanish-English dictionary of medical terms, just two indicators of how she sought, early on, to enhance the lives of families--especially children, and enrich their initial experiences in life. Those instincts mushroomed when PI was born. The simple act of giving each child in the program a book of their own sparked a cascade of other good works, and phenomenal achievements from the children themselves. Also benefitting are the volunteers from outside Mexico, including teens from the US who have had the life-changing experience of serving clients and helping to run programs on site. This organization is a model of how to make a positive impact in a place of relative global isolation. We know that increased education and opportunity, anywhere in the world, benefits us all. Proyecto Itzaes actually makes it happen.

Review for Shasta Womens Refuge, Redding, CA, USA
Shasta Women's Refuge and the Family Justice Center together work to harbor. and advocate on behalf of. women and children. In a community with high levels of unemployment, poverty and lack of education, domestic issues are heightened, and abuse is rampant. Many women have benefitted from the wonderful programs provided by this group. Their stories of courage can be found in video clips on the website. Our society needs groups like this to continue to educate against abusive behaviors, and to help women emerge from patterns of generational abuse. I can't say enough about the Women's Refuge, and its leadership. Check out their wish list online: it's basic, but crucial. Single bed sheets, diapers, duffle bags.

Review for Youth Violence Prevention Council Of Shasta County, Redding, CA, USA
What could be better than the goal of this organization, as described by their name? The Youth Violence Prevention Council sponsors Peer Court, providing an option for youth offenders to be tried outside the juvenile justice system, giving other teens an opportunity to observe and participate in court proceedings, and understand the consequences of poor choices. Local judges and lawyers volunteer to preside over and counsel the peer prosecutors and defenders, and if the dispositions and sentences are not fulfilled by the offenders, they may be remanded to juvenile court. This is a wonderful program, that can have life-changing results for any who participate in it.

Review for People Of Progress Incorporated, Sacramento, CA, USA
People of Progress is my favorite direct support agency for the underserved and homeless in Shasta County. They provide food, and emergency stipends for rent to families in need, without discrimination. They also have one of the best thrift stores in Redding!

Review for Shasta Land Trust, Redding, CA, USA
Shasta Land Trust helps to preserve wild lands and farms in the greater Shasta Cascade region. They are a well-established pillar of the local conservation movement, and engage the public with a highly successful series of Wildways events, unique and imaginative fundraisers that inform, educate and entertain as well as sustain and grow the fund. Shasta Land Trust has helped in a number of land transfers into conservation, and contributed greatly to sustaining the Northstate's many natural wonders and habitats.
