Review for Legal Aid Of Marin, San Rafael, CA, USA

Rating: 4 stars

Legal Aid of Marin has been my sole and most valueable source for legal counsel in order to fight redevelopment plans by a large out of state real estate investment trust which seeks to turn affordable housing into luxury apartments at rates most current residents will not be able to requalify for. LAM has been responsive to my inquiries and have come to the site to explain legal matters to fellow residents. While I have given what I can afford to LAM for their counsel and time, I feel strongly that money has not been a condition for my receiving needed counsel and support. Even a paid attorney - if I could afford one - might not be as responsive to this client and his fellow tenants in their fight for fair treatment for being forced out of their apartment homes.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

their responsiveness to questions, knowledge of pertinent laws and cases, and knowledge of other community resources.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

see to the above issue and perhaps see if others served felt the same way.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

a professional yet casual environment and communication style.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Friendly and helpful - never giving the impression that you're a bother or inconvenience to them.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

help a lot more people who are disadvantaged through no fault of their own.

Ways to make it better...

we could receive a little more pro-active involvement in pointing out options and strategies for best use of our limited time and resourses.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

how they manage to survive financially.

One thing I'd also say is that...

I would have likely been stomped on by big money - and still might be though to a lesser degree - had I not walked through the door into LAM.

When was your last experience with this nonprofit?

2008

Role:  Client Served & With Legal Aid of Marin's support I helped organize a tenant's association to present resident concerns to property owners and city officials regarding redevelopment plans that require the vacating of 104 apartments.
