Review for Anne Arundel County Literacy Council, Inc., Annapolis, MD, USA
I’ve volunteered for the Anne Arundel County Literacy Council for almost ten years and feel it is one of the most important non-profits in the county. The Literacy Council provides a critical service to adults in our county who have low levels of literacy and math. It offers reading and math tutoring at no cost, at locations and times that are convenient to the student, and with tutors who will work at literacy/math levels that are best for the student. The tutors are volunteers who are trained and supported by the AACLC. One of the sweetest outcomes of a tutor-student match is the boost in confidence and self-esteem that results from improved reading or math skills.

Even through the pandemic, the Anne Arundel County Literacy Council kept going. The dedicated tutors managed to keep in touch with their students, which was important on so many levels. Many students relied on the encouragement and support of their tutors just to get through the difficult months. Some students passed critical tests, allowing them to advance in their studies or their careers. Several students became US citizens. What a valuable service the AACLC provides to the entire community. Thank you to all the volunteers and staff!

I've been involved with the Anne Arundel County Literacy Council in various roles since 2013. I have seen the organization from the inside – it’s fine staff and Board members – and also witnessed our dedicated and selfless tutors in action. The initial training that the volunteers receive is supplemented by workshops and roundtables, and the direct support of staff. That training allows each tutor to meet with their student individually, at a time that works well for the student, and on material that is most important to the student – whether it’s learning the English language, or improving writing skills, or getting that extra boost in math to pass an exam. I have seen the joy in our students as they improve their self-confidence and self-worth, thereby allowing them to become more productive members of the community. It’s a win-win situation. I am a proud volunteer for the Anne Arundel County Literacy Council.

The Anne Arundel County Literacy Council is a well-established, expertly run organization, having received the GreatNonprofits Top-Rated Award for the 8th consecutive year. The volunteers who donate their time and talent in different areas are some of the finest people I've ever met and worked with. I have seen firsthand the differences they make in improving the lives of our students--sometimes it's just boosting the confidence and self-worth of the student; other times it's working with the student to get their diploma; and just as important are the tutors who help their students learn the English language. I am proud to be a part of the Anne Arundel County Literacy Council.

As Student Coordinator for the Anne Arundel County Literacy Council, I am the voice of the student. I admire the students for their courage to contact us and their determination to continue with their studies, and I congratulate them on their successes. None of this would be possible without our free, one-on-one tutoring, which is exactly the type of assistance they need. I am proud to be associated with the AACLC.

I was just a bit nervous the day I met my student, but I think she was just as nervous. We met at the library and our first session was very introductory. Today was our second meeting, and after about a half hour into the session, it just "clicked." What an exciting feeling! We felt comfortable enough to have an easy exchange. I could see her enthusiasm and her eagerness to learn, and to re-learn many of the things she was taught in her home country many years ago. And I believe she could sense my sincerity and joy in wanting to help her. The AACLC plays such a beautiful and meaningful role in helping others learn to read and function in our society -- something many of us take for granted. I'm glad I'm a part of it.
