As a board certified music therapist and a classically trained musician, I am always looking for special volunteering opportunities where I could use both my general musicianship and music therapy skills. Part of my training as a music therapist allowed me to be placed in many different clinical settings from schools, hospitals, to nursing homes working with kindergarteners to geriatric populations. However, I have never been to a place like the Carter School before. The school is uniquely designed and structured to provide amazing support and education for their special students and families. The atmosphere is warm and the school puts a strong emphasis on their education using creative arts in therapy support that I have not seen elsewhere. The friendly staff and teachers always extended their warmest and kindest welcome to me and they make sure to include me in their major school events and activities such as end of year student party as well as seasonal Thanks Giving lunch. How I sincerely look forward to those volunteering hours at the Carter School! How I always come away feeling grateful for the opportunity for me to share my skills with the students! I am filled with the profound feeling of friendship and pride in being a part of this special community where I learn and appreciate the meaning of dedication and compassion.
