I am a long-time supporter of orphan hosting programs like Project 143. Orphan hosting is a tremendous way to support international orphans. Hosting aids in the growth of the child's self-confidence and awareness to other family types than what they have experienced in the past. They must have new role models to understand that all families don't end in tragedy. By visiting America and living with a host family, they have an opportunity to learn the ways of a more functional family environment. Plus, many of these orphans that come on host programs are able to connect with families willing to adopt them. Adopting an older orphan (over the age of 7) is virtually unheard of apart from host programs. They serve a wonderful purpose in the life of older orphans who simply need a second chance at one of the basic building blocks of society... family.
