My Nonprofit Reviews

Review for The Humane Society of the United States, Washington, DC, USA
I just found out that monies given to HSUS don't benefit ANY animal shelters or animal rescue services. I'd like to know where the money actually goes.
Until then, I will donate directly to my local animal shelter

Hi Odolaas69, I work at the HSUS, and when you donate to HSUS, your money does go to help animals. We are not affiliated with local animal shelters, as they operate independently. When you make a general donation to HSUS, it goes to help continue our work to help all animals, this ranges from stopping puppy mills, to ending egregious forms of wildlife abuse. In 2011, we spent over 77% on program expenses alone. You also have the option to donate to a specific area of concern, for example, donations to our Disaster relief fund, are only used for those purposes. An example of that work, is the work we did during and after Hurricane Sandy, we operated temporary emergency shelters, worked with local groups on reuniting owners and their pets, did search and rescue, etc. You can see a complete breakdown of our funds on our website here: http://www.humanesociety.org/about/overview/annual_reports_financial_statements.html
