Review for Mata Amritanandamayi Math, Kerala, , India

Rating: 5 stars

My personal experience has been in the United States, not in India. I am part of what is known as Mother's Kitchen. Every Saturday a small group of us goes to a local church and prepares sack lunches for the homeless in the neighborhood. We give out a little lunch and a little conversation, and try to connect them with other resources when we can. Amma's teaching is that service is the very meaning of life, and being part of this project has definitely broadened my focus from my own personal problems to much larger issues of social justice.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

talking with the people who come each Saturday, listening to their stories, feeding them not just burritos but compassion and interest in their lives.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

try to get more people involved.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the strengthening of my feeling of being part of a community.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

caring, practical, idealistic and simultaneously realistic and pragmatic about the limits of our abilities and resources.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

build more homes, educate more children, care for more people without medical insurance, and in general ease even more suffering than it already does.

Ways to make it better...

I were able to do more.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

people being so busy with their own lives and struggles in this economy, and making sure more people know about what Amma's organization does.

One thing I'd also say is that...

I am constantly learning that the limits of time and energy expand with every "yes".

How frequently have you been involved with the organization?

About every week

When was your last experience with this nonprofit?

2009
