The founder of this group identified an unmet need and went about creating an organization to fill it: obtaining new or replacement IDs for people who don't have the necessary documents (i.e., birth certificates). This can be a challenging task requiring patience and money -- sometimes a lot of money. Having an ID not only allows people to vote, it also helps those in need obtain benefits to which they are entitled.

It's hard to put into words how much I love Apopo and its HeroRats. Making use of the extraordinary sense of smell and intelligence of this species of rat is helping to safely clear land minds; rapidly and effectively detect tuberculosis; and help in the battle against trafficking of endangered animals. It's one of the few organizations to which I donate monthly and deserves recognition for its work.

I learned of this wonderful organization through a midwife friend who went with them to Haiti. MFH has a clear mission and integrity -- two of the most important attributes that make a non-profit worthy of support.
