Review for The Global Switchboard, Pittsburgh, PA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

This organization educates citizens about global issues, how they affect communities, and the need for all communities - including those in the Pittsburgh region - to come up with solutions to address those issues. They also provide opportunities for action and advocacy. The small staff is passionate about impacting our community and has influenced my understanding of how interconnected all communities are and about the importance of grassroots citizen action. I was introduced to Global Solutions because they are one of the primary members of the Pittsburgh Darfur Emergency Coalition, another organization that I volunteer with.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

their excellent education and speaker series, and the great work they've done on a partner program that I volunteer with.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the way the staff challenges my way of viewing the world.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

very well educated and passionate about making our communities better places to live.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

mobilize all of Southwestern Pennsylvania to work on solutions to the global problems that face our communities!!!

When was your last experience with this nonprofit?

2007

Role:  General Member of the Public & I volunteer with staff members on a partner program.

Review for Welcome Center for Immigrants and Internationals, Pittsburgh, PA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

This great organization contributes to a diverse and thriving community by assisting recent immigrants with their career, education, housing, health, cultural, and legal needs, and more! The friendly staff is made up of volunteers from all over the world that are ready to help newcomers navigate life in the Pittsburgh region, learn their rights and responsibilities as citizens, access services, and translate documents.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

the grateful individuals and families who have acclamated and established a life in the Pittsburgh region, and are already contributing to the communities in which they live!

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

having fun helping individuals and families find answers to their questions and problems and learn about the culture of the Pittsburgh region

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

diverse, knowledgeable, professional, and multi-lingual

Ways to make it better...

I was able to continue volunteering when I went back to work full-time

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

so much work for just two full-time staff members

Review for Jubilee Association Inc, Pittsburgh, PA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

This organization has a soup kitchen that serves up meals 365 days a year, not to mention a holistic approach to empowering people to address their needs - from educational programs to a medical clinic, job searching and prisoner re-entry programs, the Jubilee Association truly understands the importance of helping people to become self-sustainable.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

serving meals at the soup kitchen, as well as touring the day care and job search programs

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

seeing an organization take such a holistic approach to eliminating hunger in our community.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

friendly and oh-so compassionate

Review for Dollar Energy Fund Inc, Pittsburgh, PA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

This great organization helps people stay warm in the long, cold winters by helping them to pay their heating bills. Not only is the service of this organization vital to the continued financial viability of many families, but it is SO easy to donate to them. I used their add-a-buck program, which just lets you check a box on your utility bill to add a dollar. I don't even notice the dollar difference in my heating bill, but I know every buck is important to help people stay warm.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

make sure everyone in Pittsburgh (or maybe beyond!) was warm through the whole winter!

When was your last experience with this nonprofit?

Role:  Donor & Donated a dollar.
