I was referred to NAMI during a very dark period in my life. My only child had been sufferring periods of severe depression and had attempted suicide a number of times. After years of “therapy” it appeared that her condition was due to our “dysfunctional” family even though manic depression had affected several members of her father’s family. Then we attended the NAMI Family to Family class. There we learned that mental illness is a brain disorder. We had no more reason to feel guilty about her illness than anyone whose child may have had diabetes or heart disease. It was like a dark cloud being lifted.
I have been active in NAMI now for 10 years. Since then my daughter has been diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder. She is being treated effectively with medication; she has returned to school and is energeticallly working toward her degree. My daughter readily admits that the education and support which we received from NAMI has had a positive effect on her life. I cannot express how much it has meant to me. Now I hope that I can help to make those benefits available to others dealing with mental illness
