Urban Tilth is a great organization that brings gardens into communities in Richmond, CA and North Richmond, a low-income unincorporated area of Contra Costa County. Urban Tilth also has gardens located at a number of West Contra Costa Unified School District's schools that students and members of the surrounding community help to grow. The Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito, CA is a well-run professional marine mammal hospital and rehabilitation center. They also educate the public and offer tours for school children and other group. They do fantastic work!
