I've been an Education Docent for just over 3 years, primarily giving behind the scenes tours to classroom students at the high school and college level, as well as free public tours offered several times daily most of the year. I've volunteered for many worthwhile organizations all around this country, and I have to say that The Marine Mammal Center tops all...they absolutely set the standard when it comes to volunteer training, education, and research, not to mention the rehabilitation of the hundreds of marine mammals they rescue annually. Part of a national stranding network, The Marine Mammal Center is responsible for over 600 miles of coastal rescue range. By patient volume, they are the largest hospital of their kind in the world. The outstanding work that they do there is accomplished by less than 50 paid staff, and with the incredible generosity of over 1,000 volunteers. For those of you who've mentioned in your review that you haven't stopped by, take the time to do it next time you come to San Francisco. Take the free tour. You will be amazed at what you learn.
