Review for Mata Amritanandamayi Math, Kerala, , India

Rating: 5 stars

Mata Amritanandamayi Math organization provides help to the most vulnerable communities in India, including children, women and aids-infected population. Its work is conducted by volunteers all over the world and focuses on 10 main areas of service: women empowerment, economic development, education, disaster relief, healthcare, environmental preservation, care homes for children, fighting hunger, housing for the poor, helping local communities. My most direct experience as a volunteer has been with regard to the ASHIS- Amritanandamayi School for the Improvement of Speech and Hearing in Trissur, Southern India. I visited the school myself in India: it serves 130 children from poor families, and offers a wonderful program allowing these children to develop the ability to communicate and thus integrate to society. The system used for the teaching is imported from the Netherlands, and consists in the use of hearing aids that allow the children to hear and thus to learn how to speak, listen to music, dance, etc. I was very much touched by the love and dedication that permeat all aspects of the curriculum of ASHIS and the warm rapport between teachers and students. Finally, I was very much impacted by the high level of dedication and commitment of the Principal of the school, who has created a wonderful family environment for ASHIS. I would greatly encourage to support and disseminate the humanitarian work of the Mata Amritanandamayi Math Organization. Many thanks!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

community service and hunger fighting soup kitchens, as well as environmental-related programs.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

increase the channels of communication, thus strengthening participation of all members in policy and decision-making. This would reinforce equalitarian treatment of all human beings, which is part of the mission of this organization.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the ability to help make a better world in so many different ways, e.g. through participation in environmental programs, education-related programs as well as health, vulnerable communities and economic development programs.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

extremely conscientious, kind and very committed to accomplishing effective results for the humanitarian tasks pursued.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

improve the world in a substantial way.

Ways to make it better...

increased levels of communication are achieved among the 25 different locations where this organization has a presence worldwide nowadays.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

responding to the increased amount of members joining in, and keeping an organic, well structured, cohesive management of the organization. All of the above while keeping the warmth, and sense of close community rapport and support among its members.

One thing I'd also say is that...

I have seen testimonies of tremendous growth in the lives of many of the volunteers who wholeheartedly devote a large part of their lives to contribute through Amritanandamayi Math to making a better world.

How frequently have you been involved with the organization?

About every week

When was your last experience with this nonprofit?

Role:  Volunteer & I helped preparing and serving food for the poor in a Soup Kitchen in New York City; I am helping with getting new hearing aids for the children in the school in Trissur (ASHIS) since the hearing aids do not work any more after three years.
