Review for Commonwealth Youthchoirs, Philadelphia, PA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

The Keystone State Boychoir serves more than 170 boys, ages 7-18, providing opportunities to rehearse, learn, sing, move, perform, act, and make joyful, moving, brilliant music in groups ranging from the youngest beginning singers in the Trainers and Apprentices up to the musically advanced Chamber Choir of high school changed voices. With large group rehearsals on Saturdays in Germantown, and smaller rehearsals on Sundays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays; the choir encourages the boys' involvement in the music and sports groups of their communities. Through KSB, the boys also gain access to elite performance opportunities, both in their choir guise but also with the Opera Company of Philadelphia, and even on Broadway in New York City! The Keystone State Boychoir has also toured and sung on all seven continents, giving the boys the life-changing experience of home-stays with choirs around the world, and singing everywhere from opera houses to cathedrals to street fairs. While I am a volunteer, I have two boys whose tenure in the choir adds up to a total of eleven years (and still singing!) I can't overstate how much the presence of music has meant in their lives, and especially in the way that the directors encourage movement and "performing" the music with the body as well as the voice. They are fun to hear, fun to watch, and fun to be with.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

The lives of my sons! and the enjoyment and enthusiasm of audiences during and after concerts.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Not sure...

When was your last experience with this nonprofit?

2012

Did your volunteer experience have an effect on you? (teaching you a new skill, or introducing new friends, etc.)

The boys are energizing, but being on tour with them is truly the experience of a lifetime. The on-the-road moments, the people and places in Bulgaria and South Africa, the concerts that never end, and the incredible sound of a choir after three weeks on non-stop-singing are enough to move me to tears.

How did this volunteer experience make you feel?

Being part of a group that brings such energy and joy with them makes you feel as if the world is truly a GOOD place.

Role:  Volunteer & I am a group manager, but also a chaperone on two tours.
