Review for Avodah, New York, NY, USA

Rating: 5 stars

My experience in AVODAH: The Jewish Service Corps was one of the pivotal experiences of my life. As a volunteer coordinator I learned how to coordinate a program, manage a program, recruit and retain volunteers as well as navigate Brooklyn, New York. The corps members and I in my year really forged a close bond based upon shared values and though I am not always in touch as often as I might like, I still count them among my closest friends. Several years ago, AVODAH decided to work on alumni and the engagement there has been improving though still has a long way to go. Because so many of the alumni are still based in New York almost all of the programming takes place there. Because of my own personal scheduling challenges I have only been able to attend one alumni retreat and hope to be present at more in the future. I Think AVODAH does tremendously important work all of the people who are touched by its' programs from clients to corps members to any person that interacts with a corps member after their service year.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

utilizing the skills I gained in my rabbinate today.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Utilize more technology such as webinars to continue to foster relationships.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the camaraderie and friendship amongst corps members and alumni.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

dedicated, thoughtful, intelligent, inspiring and making the world better everyday.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Open more sites so that corps members are able to learn and gain skills that will enable even more clients to benefit. In addition, alumni would be able to continue to use their skills in their professional lives.

Ways to make it better...

the bulk of the programming didn't take place on the east coast.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

The financial downturn and the increasing need for volunteer services without the funds to support the work being done.

How frequently have you been involved with the organization?

About every six months

When was your last experience with this nonprofit?

2009

Role:  Donor & I was a corps member in 2001-2002 (year 4) and am now a donor.
