Review for Nobelity Project, Austin, TX, USA
Turk and Christy Pipkin have created an amazing educational and action non-profit called the Nobelity Project. They have worked in the US and abroad on educational outreach and other development projects, collaborating with Nobel laureates and other key leaders around the globe. They developed the Nobelity in Schools program working with teachers to engage their students with key issues of global importance as they face the future. I am a teacher, and learned about their work after seeing the films they have produced (Nobelity, One Peace At A Time, Building Hope). I began working with my students to raise funds for supplies for a new school the Nobelity Project was building in Kenya. (Their Kenya Schools Fund is being used to build fully equipped schools in rural areas, and includes bringing clean water systems to these areas). The Nobelity Project inspired my students (and me) to take action, as we all realized that the only way to bring about change is to get up and do something, no matter how small that "something" might be. If we all take small steps, we make a difference along the path to change. My students were inspired to make a short film, including original lyrics and music, with messages of simple acts they could do (as kids who cannot yet vote) to make a difference in the world. The ripple effect of the Nobelity Project was huge. One of my students created a powerful independent study project on water use that raised awareness about conservation to new heights among students and faculty alike. My students raised money to buy books for the new Mahiga Hope school in Kenya by selling twin sets of friendship bracelets they had made; the buyer kept one and the other was sent to a new friend in Kenya. The students were inspired to get to know the kids in Kenya, and wrote letters telling about games they played, books they liked, and about family and school life. In return, we received letters that explained the culture of Kenya, and learned that we are not so different in our hopes, dreams, and goals in life. Global connections such as those provided by the Nobelity Project made it possible to learn about another culture and build relationships - it is this level of understanding across cultures that hopefully brings about more tolerance as we find we are more the same than we are different; my students gained a sense of self on a global scale, and I hope that understanding will carry with them for the rest of their lives. The Nobelity Project works tirelessly on projects here in the States as well as overseas, and are a living example of an organization set to bring about global change, One Peace At A Time!! I have been moved by their full-time dedication to making a difference in the world, inspiring others to do the same, and know that I will continue to try to set an example for my students and family as I continue to look for ways to help our global community. I rate the non-profit Nobelity Project "Five Stars."
