My Nonprofit Reviews

Laura Anthony
Review for Organization for Autism Research, Arlington, VA, USA
I am writing this review from the perspective of a 2008 OAR grant recipient. OAR was the first organization to fund the development of a new line of intervention research which has resulted in a popular published manual and very positive results in a larger, NIMH funded effectiveness trial. At the time they funded our project, they understood the need to use community-based participatory research methods better than any other autism funding organization at the time. They understood the need for intervention research that can improve the lives of people with autism immediately. They understood the need to develop interventions that can work in the real world, which can, at times, be a whole lot harder than working in a lab. And, they understood that interventions need to focus on building strengths, empowerment and resilience in those with autism rather than focusing on disease processes. These things make OAR unique, and I will always be grateful to OAR and the dedicated people who work there.
