Review for Nami Gulf Coast, Houston, TX, USA

Rating: 5 stars

In 2000 when our college student son was diagnosed with a severe mental ilness after admission for pyschotic symptoms, we knew notihng about mental illness. The sudden onset of his ilness was a total surprise as he'd been a good student and was doing well in college. A friend told me about a free ediucational class offered by NAMI GUlf Coast. It was the beginning of an incredibly helpful relationship with volunteers who had "been there" and offered generously from their experiences on how to access the resources critical to treating our son's illness and teaching the skills crucial to our managing this new challenge in our family. Twelve years later NAMI GUlf Coast continues to be there with free classes for all ---- individuals living with mental illness and their familes, school personnel, first responders, and members at all levels of the justice system. Ongoing support is provided through peer suppor groups and effectvie advocacy through patient forging of partnerships with local and state officials and agencies. In 2011 NAMI GUlf Coast established a re-sale shop which employees people with menetal illness and raises funds for operating expenses. NAMI GUlf Coast strives to improve the quality of life for all people affected by mental illness and to offer hope to all by helping people understand that these brian disorders are manageable like other chronic illnesses such as diabetis and epilepsy.
