I worked for a while as a volunteer at MMC. I can't begin to tell you the quality of that organization. The dedication and incredible hours and work put together there impresses me to this day. I saw hundreds of marine mammals come and go, some badly wounded, shot or sick, never made it back to the wild, but so many did make it that otherwise would not have. I was a part of rescues on beaches all over Northern CA, as well as releases of rehabilitated animals. Caring for the animals, feeding them, medicating them, cleaning up after them...the works. I can't ever recall a single occasion where I took pause at the way the whole place was run. If every animal welfare organization was run as professionally and with as much day to day devotion as MMC, the world would be a better place for sure. Next time you're in San Francisco, go to Pier 39. Go check out the sea lions barking at one another, lounging all over the floating platforms. Keep an eye out for those with a tag on their ear, because that sea lion got a second chance because of the MMC.
