I have been a volunteer with Family Outreach for almost 20 years. During the new volunteer training, we were encouraged to learn about the different volunteer opportunities-mentoring, community education and parenting classes. I chose to sit in on a parenting class as I had never heard of such a thing. As I walked into the class I was thinking, "What kind of people need parenting classes?" However, after just one class, I knew that I was that 'kind of person.' At the time, my family was in crisis (another one!)and my husband and I were raising our first grandchild. It is not an exaggeration to say that what I learned in those classes made all the difference in the type of person he is today...an intelligent, responsible, thoughtful and caring adult who understands that every choice has a consequence, whether good or bad. Simply put, my life, and that of many others in my family, has been changed for the better because Family Outreach and its dedicated volunteers were there. And, because they were there when I needed them (even though I didn't know it), I have made it my mission to also "be there" for as many parents and grandparents, in as many locations, as possible to have the same wonderful opportunity I had.
