My Nonprofit Reviews
Demetria W.
Review for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Miami, Miami, FL, USA
I have been a Big since 2005. I elected at the time to have my college organization branch of the NAACP to take on the task of community volunteerism. I feel in love with the aims and goals of Big Brothers and Big Sisters as well as see the pressing needs of funding and the recruitment of more volunteers especially men! I have been matched to my little for almost six years now and indeed it has been a pleasant and at times a rough journey due to the weathering of life. Despite my personal issues, I continue to press on with my match as well as having the assistance of my current match support specialist.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
Being a better teacher (former occupation), mother, and recruiter. I have grown personally because of these organization. Having met so many diverse populations of Bigs and Littles helps you to realize that your time, attention, and regard can cause varied ripples of change within the self, the family you service, and ultimately the community.
If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...
Have more Volunteers. It's not the fault of the organization. The main issue I have encountered from my cultural lenses is that many would like to volunteer but they can't clear the stringent background checks. I understand and the respect the need for our children safety but some offense I feel could be investigated more.
