Review for SKIN CANCER FOUNDATION INC, New York, NY, USA

Rating: 1 stars

Please stop this group from continuing to "sell" its seal of approval for products that do not prevent skin cancer. Perry Robbins and his cadre of Mohs micrographic cosmetic dermatologists have created a false image. They do no independent testing, they give no money to research, and they have attached their seal to products such as a body wash. Melanoma is a serious and deadly disease, and the Skin Cancer Foundation "approval" is dangerous and misleading. This group cloned itself into the International Skin Cancer Foundation. They have no affiliation with research or testing institutes.

Role:  Professional with expertise in this field

The Skin Cancer Foundation Seal of Recommendation is a symbol of safe and effective sun protection that is recognized by consumers worldwide. In order to earn the Seal of Recommendation, manufacturers must provide scientific data that meets stringent criteria showing that their sun protection product sufficiently and safely aids in the prevention of sun-induced damage to the skin. This data is reviewed by a volunteer team of photobiologists – experts in the study of the interaction between ultraviolet radiation and the skin. A full list of the criteria and tests required for a product to earn the Seal of Recommendation is available at http://www.skincancer.org/seal. Each year, The Skin Cancer Foundation spends 85% of its budget on program expenses to raise awareness about skin cancer prevention and early detection. Since 1981, The Skin Cancer Foundation has awarded research grants to fund pilot studies that lead to improvements in the prevention and clinical management of skin cancer. In 2012 alone, The Skin Cancer Foundation awarded $155,000 in research grants to dermatology residents, fellows, and young faculty from institutions throughout the United States. Since its founding in 1979, The Skin Cancer Foundation has set the standard for educating the public and the medical profession about skin cancer, its prevention by means of sun protection, the need for early detection, and prompt, effective treatment. It is the only international organization devoted solely to combating skin cancer.
