Review for Communities In Schools, Inc., Arlington, VA, USA
Communities In Schools surrounds students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life. That's the official mission statement. What that really looks like is passionate professionals working inside schools in 25 states serving 1.3 million kids with one-on-one services to help them overcome the non-academic barriers that stand in the way of their goals. Staff members called Site Coordinators identify students who are most at risk of dropping out of school and develop relationships of support to uncover issues like hunger, lack of adequate housing and clothing, lack of school supplies, medical/dental/vision issues, peer issues, safety issues and more. Then they bring the resources from the local community such as food banks, clothes closets, supply drives, civic clubs, faith groups and volunteers from the business community to provide the resources they need. At the same time, Site Coordinators work with students to develop goals for college and careers and give students guidance to achieve their goals. This is the place where the business community and the schools come together to insure positive outcomes for all students, which in turn, makes families stronger, builds more prosperous communities, and keeps keeps our nation moving forward.
