Review for New Kingdom Trailriders, Moline, IL, USA

Rating: 5 stars

This is a wonderful program that benefits both the riders and their families. Our kids develop not only muscle tone, confidence and riding skills while having fun with the horses, we've also had a child who spoke his first word ever after joining the program and riding for only a few weeks! For the families, the program gives the childrens' caregivers a little break and it allows them to see their children participate in a "normal" activity. There is much smiling, waving and picutre taking going on as the riders go by the observation area! It take a tremendous amount of work and money to keep this program going, and every year I am grateful to be a part of helping others benefit mentally, physically and spiritually from being with the horses.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Seeing the physical and mental differences in the kids from the beginning of the riding session to the end of the session.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Give Barb a couple of days off! She's earned it!

When was your last experience with this nonprofit?

2012

What one change could this group make that would improve your volunteer experience?

Have nightly volunteers do a little cleaning before they leave.

Did your volunteer experience have an effect on you? (teaching you a new skill, or introducing new friends, etc.)

I sometimes feel a lack of confidence in my riding lessons, and remembering the joy and determination of the kids often spurs me on.

How did this volunteer experience make you feel?

It is very rewarding to know that I've made a difference in someone's life--that's why I keep coming back!

Role:  Volunteer & I am a horse leader, which means I help tack up the horses and I lead them during the riding sessions. I also assist with cleaning the barn and tack, and help with fundraising.
