Review for Asha for Education, Los Angeles, CA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

I started an outsider observing the volunteer meetings at the Central New Jersey Chapter. I liked the people, their energy, enthusiasm, and genuine concern for the cause of serving underprivileged children. I became a volunteer. Over the course of a few months I became a volunteer and helped with fundraiser event in April 2006. It was a huge success. Then I proceeded to coordinate the 'Work an Hour' campaign for the central New Jersey chapter. It was also a success. Then I served as a chapter coordinator for about two years. Now I am serving in various capacities as a volunteer. Apart from serving a cause which is great, my experience has resulted in personal growth. Be it leadership through peer motivation, or taking up a task, planning it, executing it all with help of volunteers is a huge learning.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

seeing first hand the impact it has on the children who receive the funds. Last year I visited a deep interior coastal area in Andra Pradesh where over 70 HIV+ kids were getting education benefits through the funding from Asha for Education.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

There is no rigid structures or rules. Volunteers determine by voting what the chapter should adopt as policies/rules etc. Each volunteer can take up tasks and other volunteers will join to help.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

We have people of all ages. 70+ to early 20s.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Use that to raise awareness about this organization and its work -ex: screen video ads in movie halls, TV etc-. Fund projects in USA, as the money we raise now is too small to make an impact in USA. Also it will help us scale up and do big fundraisers.

Ways to make it better...

we would work on projects in the USA.

How frequently have you been involved with the organization?

About every week

When was your last experience with this nonprofit?

2009

Role:  Volunteer & As recent as October 4, 2009 on which day I volunteered to cheer my fellow volunteers who ran the Jersey Shore Half marathon to raise funds. It made me proud to see many many fellow volunteers who are not athletically gifted to push their limits to finish.
