As a veterinarian, I see my share of rescues, and I have to praise the efforts of Mid-Atlantic Great Dane Rescue League. I feel lacking in calling what they do efforts, when in fact it's all success! The volunteers within this organization perform a magnificent service to their danes and to all the families they adopt their rescues to. My first encounter with Mid-Atlantic Great Dane Rescue League was about 5 years ago when I was looking to adopt a dane. I encountered their process that potential adoptees go through. It is rigorous, yet necessary. Great danes are giants, gentle as they may be, they are not the right pet for every home. It's a solid process. Their foster system is great and the volunteer foster parents perform such a wonderful service for the danes themselves as well as their future families. They give these rescues the love and security that they may have never received before. In these homes they can develop both physically and psychologically to achieve their full potential and personality. It takes so much time and effort. I got my 2nd dane through a rescue effort directly. The volunteers went above and beyond normal compassion in this case. Driving hours to get this puppy from the home. Then driving hours back to bring the puppy directly to me to evaluate medically. This pup was dying, screaming in severe pain with systemic bone disease, malnutrition to a severe extent and pneumonia. This pup is named George, I kept him and he is almost 5 years old! It was a long haul for him with many setbacks along the way and he never complained once. He is the sweetest soul I could ever imagine. He's my buddy. I can truly say If it weren't for the efforts (successes) of the volunteers, George would not have lived to see his 5th month of life, never mind his 5th year. I recommend Mid-Atlantice Great Dane Rescue League all the time to all my friends, colleagues, and clients who are looking for a rescue dog and love danes as much as I do.
