I started volunteering with All Hands right after the 2010 Haiti Earthquake and two years later I am still here.
I have volunteered and worked with a number of organizations in the past 7 years and I have stuck around with All Hands because it is different. We approach disasters in a different way. While some large organizations have vast sources funding and produce lots of results, they are disconnected from the community and don’t necessarily meet their immediate needs. Meanwhile smaller grassroots organizations are connected to the community but have limited funding and can’t make substantial changes. All Hands has found that middle ground, we are extremely involved with the community and produce substantial results that have a direct and significant impact on people’s lives.
Every week I have representatives from organizations of all sizes and backgrounds visit us, wanting to from a partnership because they know we “get things done”. When we first got to Leogane nobody knew who we were, now all of Leogane recognizes us and our reputation has made to Port au Prince and other cities in Haiti. In a community workshop a couple months ago, a world-renowned organization’s work was heavily criticized by local residents. When they asked “how can we improve our work?”, the answer was straight forward “be more like All Hands”.
