Review for Operation Understanding DC, Washington, DC, USA

Rating: 5 stars

OUDC is an amazing program that provides youth from all socioeconomic classes in DC the opportunity to engage in a year long program learning about and working towards social justice through the lens of the Civil Rights movement as well as from people working against injustices today. We are not only engrained with the message of action but learn how to spread that message to the greater community through speeches and facilitations that participants lead in the second half of the program.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

the way I've interacted with others since returning from the 'Summer Journey'. Also in my awareness of racial inequalities and African American culture.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

The 23 day 'Summer Journey' following the trail of the Freedom Riders in the South was a once in a lifetime opportunity. Among the dozens of incredible speakers we heard from was Joanne Bland, a participant in 'Bloody Sunday', in Selma, Alabama.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Very supportive and were experts in facilitating provoking dialogues from the group.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Open up this opportunity to many more kids than the 30 a year it currently takes.

How frequently have you been involved with the organization?

One time

When was your last experience with this nonprofit?

2009

Role:  Client Served & I'm currently a member of OUDC's Class 15.
