Review for SUSAN G KOMEN BREAST CANCER FOUNDATION, INC., Dallas, TX, USA
My mother is a 17+ year cancer survivor. She had cancer in her early 30s back in the early 90s, when the survival rate was dismal. Shortly after the turn of the millennium, she started walking with my aunt in the Race for the Cure in our town. Both I and my husband walked with them for several years in support of her. However, each time we'd go, I was upset by the waste (all the throw-away corporate freebies and bottled water, all plastic, containing known estrogen-mimicking chemicals), but just kept my mouth shut. Last year I refused to walk when I discovered their t-shirts were being made in Nicaraguan sweatshops. Subsequent research has proven to me that this, like so many charities, is an organization run for political reasons that does not actually help where it claims it does. SG Komen foundation actively fights health care and breast cancer legislation, and cut funding for breast and cervical cancer screening to Planned Parenthood for purely political reasons, leaving low income women in a lurch.
