Review for Center For Great Apes, Wauchula, FL, USA
The most amazing miracles happen at the Center For Great Apes! I've seen the love and dedication of the staff and volunteers transform a poor, abused, emaciated creature back into the healthy, beautiful creature God created. Not only that, these apes live in an environment as close to the wild as possible. I know for a fact that each ape is loved and respected. They have pool parties and ape birthday cakes, wrapped christmas gifts and lots of enrichment! There isn't another place that I feel deserves recognition more than the Center For Great Apes!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
I've seen apes come in having been abused, neglected, and exploited. They are given back their health, natural lifestyle and dignity at CFGA. Right now, a chimp who lived in a small cage forover 40 years, suffering from malnutrition and neglect is the newest resident. He could barely sit up when he came. With lots of love and care, he's growing his hair back, moving around, building a nest to sleep in and had even begun playing behaviors. This is one of the many miracles at CFGA.
If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...
Help them expand. There are so many chimps and orangs waiting for a loving place to live out their lives in dignity.

What one change could this group make that would improve your volunteer experience?
The only thing that would improve my experience is if they moved closer to me! I travel 3 hours to volunteer there and 3 hours back home. It's worth it. I'm handicapped and they gladly accept any help I am able to give and make me feel welcome and important.
Did your volunteer experience have an effect on you? (teaching you a new skill, or introducing new friends, etc.)
It's opened my eyes to so many things: animal rights, legal issues. I've learned so much through my training as well about these amazing animals! I've made many new friends, especially among the apes themselves. (Ieven adopted Pongo!) I've also learned a lot about courage and dedication from Tina , who did my training. She's battling cancer and no matter how weak or sick she feels, she's there for Apes! She does an amazing job organizing events, training volunteers, writing the newsletter and blog, and SO much more.
How did this volunteer experience make you feel?
Valued, enriched, blessed, and very fortunate to be allowed to participate in this important work.
