Review for Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy, Tallahassee, FL, USA
Volunteer USA had its humble beginnings in Florida - and though it has never lost its humility, it has grown exponentially by recognizing that volunteerism is best in a one-on-one environment. When I was in state government, we were encouraged to volunteer in youth programs -especially literacy programs, because the Tallahassee area is economically challenged and has many underprivileged children who read far below their age level. Many of my staff volunteered, and the reports of the joy on the children's faces can not be matched. At one reading event, I read with kids in Key West as part of a coordinated event statewide, and we set a world record for the number of readers reading the same material out loud at the same time! Volunteer USA makes sure it's easy and that you have the tools you need. After that, it's you and the children, and I just thank God for Volunteer USA and the good work it does -- and allows many of us individuals to do. Of course, they do so much more now, but their focus is still on serving, and they do so with a humble heart.
