My Nonprofit Reviews

Review for Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy, Tallahassee, FL, USA
I HAVE ACTED AS ADVISOR FOR THE TEEN TRENDSETTER PROGRAM FOR THE PAST 15 YEARS. BOTH THE TEENS AND THE ELEMENTARY STUDENTS GET SO EXCITED TO BE IN A MENTORING RELATIONSHIP. STUDENTS ON BOTH ENDS MAKE A TREMENDOUS COMMITMENT AND ARE MAKING A SPASH IN THE COMMUNITY. PRINCIPALS, PARENTS, COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS ALL COME TOGETHER TO ADVANCE READING SKILLS AND ACHIEVEMENT. THE EFFORT BUILDS COMMUNITY AND BRINGS SELF-CONFIDENCE AND SUCCESS TO THE YOUNG STRUGGLING READERS--A TRUE EFFORT FOR NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND. SUPPORTERS IN THE PAST INCLUDE FPL AND THIS YEAR COMCAST AND STATE FARM INSURANCE. IT'S A WIN-WIN, STRUCTURED, RELEVANT AND MUCH NEEDED SCHOOL-COMMUNITY EFFORT!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
advising the high school mentors
If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...
With high school work schedules and the economy, I would reduce the number of sessions required for a legitimate program. Offer extra recognition for those mentors who actually are mentoring after their own school hours rather than during the school day.
What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...
seeing the look on the children's faces when their big buddies (Trendsetters) show up.
The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...
Enthusiastic, competent, dedicated
If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...
Pay the teens to mentor, and more than likely contribute to the absolute success of thousands of elementary school students.
Ways to make it better...
Our computers interfaced better
In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...
Meeting the required commitment--issues such as transportation, time, conflicting schedules, economy, supervision on both ends (high school, elementary school--meeting needs of everyone.
One thing I'd also say is that...
There is considerable potential for this program. Everyone involved is enthusiastic and committed and supportive. Confounding variables become barriers, but it has never been the result of a lack of desire or belief in the validity of this effort!
