Review for Yara Arts Group Inc, New York, NY, USA

Rating: 5 stars

Yara Arts Group creates visually stunning theatre pieces that explore the contemporary and traditional cultures of the East. We started Yara in 1990 because we felt we had privileged access to magnificent texts from overlooked cultures. This access was due to the diversity and language skills of our artists. Each Yara production is an original theatre piece created in rehearsal by the ensemble based on numerous texts we have translated specially for the production. It also involves collaboration with international artists who perform in their own languages together with our company, allowing us to enter into a deeper cultural dialogue on stage. What follows is a layering of languages, images, music, rhythms and textures that are unique in origin but alike in their impact on the human soul. This is the foundation of our belief that theatre can communicate with everyone in the world. Our designers join us in the rehearsal process and their designs evolve organically with the theatre piece. Together we create original theatre productions in Yara's signature style of: multilingual dialogue and songs supported by evocative visuals, music and movement. Our company has created 24 original theatre pieces rooted in Buryat Mongolian, Kyrgyz, Japanese and Ukrainian material that have all premiered at La MaMa Experimental Theatre in New York, where Yara is a resident company. Afterwards, these pieces have also been performed in Eastern Europe, Siberia, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, China and the Pacific Region both cities in major theatres or at avant-garde festivals and in villages in cultural centers.
