Review for Society of St. Andrew, Big Island, VA, USA
Society of St. Andrew takes an ancient biblical practice, gleaning, and brings it to the 21st Century. With the help of volunteers and donors, good food that would go to waste is gathered and distributed to those in need. One example is the Potato Drop at the Festival of Sharing in Sedalia MO. This year 42,000 pounds of potatoes arrived at the Festival via a Society of St. Andrew semi truck. Youth Groups then bagged the potatoes. The bags were distributed among food pantries and soup kitchen representatives who were there to pick them up. This is all done in a very efficient and organized manner. Monetary donations go toward transportation expense of getting the food where it needs to go. Volunteer gleaners work all over the U.S., keeping the costs low. I think it is a great idea.
